Our Liebster Award Nomination
We would like to start off by thanking Christina from Livin’ Pura Vida. It was an awesome surprise to be nominated by her for the Liebster Award. It’s a great feeling to know that the hard work that goes into keeping our blog alive is being appreciated, especially by fellow travel bloggers. – See more at:
What is the Liebster Award?
Bloggers can nominate new blogs for the The Liebster Award. The purpose of this award is to bring recognition to new bloggers and learn more about them. It follows a “pay-it-forward” concept; where each nominee then goes on to promote other new bloggers.
Thank the blogger who nominated you, and include a link to their blog. Provide answers to the eleven questions from that person. Give nominations to other bloggers, who have less than 500 Twitter followers. Ask them eleven new questions. Let them know about their nominations, so that they can proceed with the award process.
Our Answers to Christina’s Questions:
1. What is your most memorable travel moment?
We only left South Africa on 19 April, but so far I think it was when we boarded that plane back in Johannesburg to fly to Thailand. We had decided on this crazy move 8 months prior and it had been a long and stressful time with so much to sort out. However, boarding that plane, we knew we had made the right decision. That no matter how hard it got, and no matter how crazy people back home thought we were, we were living our travel dreams.
2. Why do you travel?
To get exposure to as much of the world as possible; we appreciate how short life is so we no longer wanted to be stuck in a cubicle when we had the opportunity to get out there and appreciate the scenery and the people that this world has to offer.
3. Why do you blog?
We wanted a place where we could share our experiences. Somewhere our friends and family, the rest of the world, can keep up with what we are up to. It is ultimately our goal to be digital nomads working from anywhere in the world so the blog was also a great way to get us and our writing exposed to a larger audience.
4. What are your top three places you’d like to live?
Chiang Mai was definitely on the list of top places we’d like to live. We have been here for nearly 3 months and loving it.
Our next three picks are Amsterdam, New York and London. However, we will likely be living in Asia for the next few years.
5. How did you start traveling?
We were tired of our corporate jobs and wanted to get off the path that we all seem so predestined to follow. We were also tired of saving up for our one 2-week holiday a year. So we made the huge decision to give it all up, much to the horror of our friends and family, and move to Thailand.
6. Is there anywhere you would not want to go?
Collen isn’t keen on India, so will need to find a travel buddy for that one. Also Australia has never made it onto our bucket list, yet we keep seeing more and more amazing photos of Australia so we are a bit on the fence about this one.
7. What’s your least favourite part of traveling?
We absolutely love being in new places and exploring as much as we can. However, the part we probably like the least is actually getting to the place. The long, uncomfortable bus rides. The squashed minivan when the trip takes three hours longer than planned. But if this is the hardest part of our lives we can definitely cope.
8. What’s the strangest travel experience you’ve ever had?
No strange experiences so far, but it’s just a matter of time. There are bound to be many, especially when we start travelling more around Thailand and to surrounding countries. Look forward to them.
9. What one thing will you not travel without?
Travel towels – we bought them back in South Africa before we left and they have been the best purchase. You never know if you are going to have towels in your accommodation or what state they will be in. Our travel towels fold up really small and dry super-fast. An absolute must on a packing list.
10. Share one of your favourite travel photos and tell us a bit about it.
The photo you are looking at is pure relaxation laying in a hammock in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Drinking beers and not having a care in the world. Awesome day out.
11. What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome?
Probably making the decision to leave South Africa and move across the world to a country we had visited only once and where we wouldn’t be able to speak the language. We are also both in our 30’s so quitting our steady, good corporate jobs to go work for much less money was a huge decision. Some said it, others didn’t, but I think a lot of people thought we were crazy. “Why would you be doing this when you should be buying a house and having babies.” No thank-you.
